Do you know Sid Vicious?

He was an English musician best known as the bassist of the influential punk rock group Sex Pistols, died when he was 21, and is considered very, very punk!

He was the first one to wear one, it had a fancy letter R on it!

Since the Sex Pistols were such a popular punk group, the look caught on, and soon all the punks were wearing them.

It faded, like all fads do, but recently a manga(and a movie based off it) called NANA, compares one of the punk main characters to Sid and he even wears a replica of the necklace. Since the movie was so popular, more people are wearing them again.

The object, is to have the one you love or are in a relationship with lock it onto your neck, and then they keep the key! That's how it was with Sid and Nancy!

In the BDSM community, a submissive/slave may wear a padlock/key necklace as a symbol of being dominated/owned by Another.

You'd have to ask the individual. Chances are it is just a fashion accessory. But it may have a meaning to the person wearing it. But it doesn't have any meaning in and of itself.

It could fit with various stereotypes like gangsta, punk, etc. But I think in a more general sense, he just wants people to know (or think) that he's 'hardcore'.

no real symbolism or anything, just stems from the fact that the bassist of the Sex Pistols (Sid Vicious) had a padlock that he wore around his neck, and so it's sort of an homage or tradition to him.

john simon ritchie AKA sid vicous was actually given his rabbit "R" padlock necklace by Chrissy Hynde who was meant to marry the sex pistols lead singer johnny rotten but ended up marrying ray davies from the kinks. sid had 3 versions of the necklace( one around his neck, one on his fly and i beleive nancy had the other) sids mother anne beverly gave his necklace to gary oldman for the movie Sid and Nancy and i beleive it was recently auctioned between 12,500-35,000. it had to be cut off of him by police when he was arrested for nancy spungens murder and sent to rikers island. There was no key for the necklace!
