People I live with said that white stuff on wheat bread is not mold, its just the way the bread is. Its like half a ring shaped of this white stuff. I threw some out and they were mad and said it wasnt mold but I thought it was. Now I want to eat some of the bread but want to make sure they know what they are talking about before I do.

I’m 69 years old and have been eating bread that long. When you see that white stuff, it is about to turn to mold. I have never purchased a loaf of bread or hot dog/hamburger buns with flaky flour on it. Like the writer in this site, throw it away when in doubt.

For health reasons, I sometimes bake 50% white flour/50% wheat flour bread in molds. This gives you the health benefits of whole grain flour with the more artistic properties of refined white flour. What kind of bread is it? If its a regular loaf of prepackaged bread from the supermarket, then white stuff on it is mold. If it’s homemade or an artisan bread from a bakery then there is a possibility that the white stuff is a design in either seeds or flour or cornstarch or some other ingredient that was put there intentionally for decoration.

It’s flour. I worked in an industrial bakery. They have to coat the loaves with flour so it doesn’t get stuck in the machinery.It comes out of the BIG oven in pans that hold five loaves of bread each and then they have this cool suction cup thing that pulls the bread out of the pan. It then rides on conveyor belts for about an hour before it goes to the slicing machine.The oven cooks up to 55 loaves of bread per row and I think there are about 25 rows in the oven at any time.

If it stays on after the dusting attempt then it is the precursor of the next stage of mold, being that lovely blue or green which we are all so familiar with ð When mine doesn’t pass the dust test it makes it to the garbage can.
