CUTTING speed is the speed of the tool or material. For example, on a miller, the cutting speed is the RPM of the tool in the collet, whereas on a metal lathe, the cutting speed is the RPM of the material in the chuck. All tools have a rated cutting speed, but generally we use a quick little equation to figure this out. (Trade secret ya see…)
FEED rate is the rate at which you feed the material to the tool/tool to the material. This determines how large the swarf shavings will be and how rough the cut will be, but it’s primary purpose is actually to preserve the tool. If you feed something too fast, you’ll overheat the tool which will decrease its lifespan.
Cutting DIRECTION is pretty self explanitory. However, you may or may not know that metals have grains. Cast metals in particular have grains that are aligned, so much the same concept as cutting wood- if you cut with the grain, you’ll find that you split the wood, whereas if you cut against it, you get a cleaner cut. Same applies to metal, but instead of splintering, you get cracks and what’s called kickback, where the tool is going against the grain and catches the job, and “kicks” it out of place.

Cutting speed is the rpm of the tooling, which is figured according to the size and shape of the tool and the material being cut. Feed rate is how fast the machine feeds the work into the tool. That’s how fast the table feed on a miller is moving, or how fast the carriage on a lathe is moving. Another factor that is part of that is cutting depth – deeper cuts will often have a slower feed. Cutting direction probably refers to climb milling – you should refer to a book and illustrations to understand that better.
Cutting speed is the speed difference between the workpiece and the cutting edge (in the cutting direction. Feed is the speed that you move the cutting tool perpendicular to the workpiece.
A simple (but not quite perfect) example of this would be mowing your grass. If you think of the mower as a big razor blade that you are dragging over your lawn, the cutting speed would be how fast you are walking, the cutting direction is the direction that you are walking. You walk back and forth cutting off small strips of grass, and you slowly advance in the direction perpendicular to the direction that you walk during each swipe. The speed that you advance in that perpendicular direction would be your feed rate (probably best expressed as inches/swipe).
