Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is often used in these situations. TPN is administered intravenously and contains fluid, electrolytes (like potassium, sodium, chloride) calories in the form of sugar (dextrose) and vitamins/minerals. A separate solution of lipids (fats) is often used with this to provide nutrient intake that is as close as possible to a “real” diet of food and fluids. TPN isn’t perfect – feeding someone through an IV exclusively can cause problems with the body’s regulation of glucose, for example. It can also cause problems with fluid overload in people whose hearts and kidneys are not functioning well. People on TPN require intensive medical management and monitoring.
