What is the correct way to back up a car?
I am taking my driving test soon, and I would like to know the correct way to back up a car. While I am familiar with the process, I want to ensure I perform it correctly to avoid any deductions on my test. Typically, I place one hand on the steering wheel and my other hand on the passenger seat while looking behind me and checking my mirrors. Is this the proper technique for backing up? Thank you for your time; I appreciate your help.

I do the “Look over the shoulder” method. I don’t like my car moving in a direction that I’m not facing.
the way i do it is i use my left hand and put my right arm over the back of the seat and start backing and at the same time start cutting my wheels. i also look through the passenger side mirror to tell how close i,am to the curb. it always worked for me.
When backing up, put your right arm over the head rest of the passenger seat. Look over your right shoulder out the back window to make sure nothing is in your way. Back up slowly.
Go to your states Department of Transportation website and download the drivers ed manual for your state. That is the best answer I can give.
the best way to reverse your car is to take your right arm and put your right hand on the shoulder of the passengers’ seat, turn your head around completely, but your left hand on the top of the steering wheel and reverse the caR.
Make sure you do turn your head to face the direction of travel – ie out the rear windscreen, and if examiners in the States (I’m guessing that’s where you are) are as fastidious as they are here in England you’d better make sure you don’t rely on your mirrors – only use them to check your positioning as necessary, and to keep your eye on traffic/pedestrians. If turning your head round requires you to take one hand off the steering wheel that is fine, but you must show complete control of the vehicle at all times, and complete awareness of your surroundings.
In addition to some of the good answers, I will add that even when operating a motor vehicle in reverse, the operator still needs to be aware of the vehicle all around – a quick check of the front and both sides of the vehicle, while reversing, is essential to avoid any possible collision with an object or person
I would have both hands on the wheel before you start backing up. It is OK to have 1 on it just to look back but I would return it to the wheel before starting to back up.
