What is the difference between GU10 and GU24 base bulbs?

I have a ceiling fan with three halogen bulbs that use a GU10 base. I’d like to replace them with CFLs, but all the CFLs I’ve found have a GU24 base. I haven’t compared the two bases side by side yet and was wondering what the differences are. From what I’ve seen, both have two prongs. Are the prongs a different size?

The only alternative I’ve found for GU10 bulbs, other than halogen, is LED, but they’re quite expensive. If a GU24 bulb can fit in a GU10 socket, I’d prefer to buy a CFL with a GU24 base. Additionally, can anyone tell me if a CFL (GU10 or GU24) produces a less focused light compared to halogen? The halogen bulbs I currently have create a very directed beam, leaving dark spots in areas not covered, which doesn’t look great. I was hoping a CFL would provide a more diffused and spread-out light.

typically it is the size of the prongs but hold side by side to see if they are the same or how different . led is expensive but will last many years and wont cost as much to run lowering your bill

The difference lies in the distance between the pins of the in the bayonet connector (here it is a twist and lock type). In a GU10 based bulb the distance between the pins is 10mm whereas in GU24 the distance between the pins is 24mm. There are adapters available to plug a GU10 based bulb to GU24 socket.

in GU the U means universal so you can use these bulbs in a GU and a GZ fitting. The GZ bulbs can only be used in a GZ fitting. If you look at the ceramic edges on the bulbs you will see the GZs are at right angles whereas the GUs are chamfered of at 45 degrees

A GU10's pins are 10mm apart and a GU24's pins are 24mm apart. The pins are the same size just have a different distance between them.
