What is the difference between GU10 and GU24 base bulbs?

I have a ceiling fan that has 3 halogen bulbs which state they have a GU10 base. I was wanting to put CFL's in instead but all the CFL's I locate say GU24. I have not put the two side by side for a comparison and was wondering what the difference is. From what I can see they are both a two prong bulb. Are the prongs different size?? the only option I have found in the GU10 besides halogen is LED and they are very expensive. If the GU24 can fit in the GU10 then I would like to buy the CFL with a GU24 base. Also if anyone can tell me if a CFL GU10 or GU24 produces less of a focused effect than the halogen. They bulbs I have in there now direct the light to one specific spot leaving dark spots in the areas not covered looks like crap. I was hoping that a CFL would be more spread out.

The difference lies in the distance between the pins of the in the bayonet connector (here it is a twist and lock type). In a GU10 based bulb the distance between the pins is 10mm whereas in GU24 the distance between the pins is 24mm. There are adapters available to plug a GU10 based bulb to GU24 socket.... Show More

in GU the U means universal so you can use these bulbs in a GU and a GZ fitting. The GZ bulbs can only be used in a GZ fitting. If you look at the ceramic edges on the bulbs you will see the GZs are at right angles whereas the GUs are chamfered of at 45 degrees... Show More

A GU10's pins are 10mm apart and a GU24's pins are 24mm apart. The pins are the same size just have a different distance between them. http://donsnotes.com/home_garden/light-bulb-size-r...... Show More
