That is the optical sound port, u get true 5.1 surround sound from the optical port when connected to a compatible surround sound receiver.... Show More

when attaching an optical audio cable from your ps2 to your audio receiver, you will get all digital 5.1 surround sound. The sound quality is much more better than when you use the analog cables (ex, red/white cable). For $20-30, it is a good investment if you intend to use your audio receiver with your ps2. Remember, not only games but DVD movies also produces better audio quality.... Show More

Audio dropping out sounds more like something physically interrupting the signal to me – unless the cables are bell wire I can’t imagine them causing that. You might want to take a look at the build quality of the source selector you’re using – a dodgy switch could be the culprit. Take the switch out and try the system with one source at a time to see if you can narrow it down.... Show More
