* Minerals and ions dissolve in water – this is how they are transported around the bodies of organisms. If it was not for water, they would not be able to be transported around the body

* Water helps regulate body temperature – for example, it prevents an organism from over-heating. This is because it takes large amounts of heat energy for water to evaporate- thus when water evaporates this will absorb large amounts of heat energy, thus cooling the organisms

*Similarly, large amounts of heat energy most be taken away before water freezes – this is important because water makes up most of the cells contents, thus the contents of cells won’t freeze easily

* Thus water is slow to change in energy – this helps in keeping body temperature constant

* some substances within the bodies or organisms will not react unless they are dissolved in water

* water is needed for respiration in plants

* Water is transparent – allows light absorption for under water plants, so that photosynthesis can occur

* water at 4*C is more dense than water at 0*C. Thus in lakes and other bodies of water, the ice will float on the top and the water at 4*C will be under the ice. This top layer of ice insulates the water, allowing organisms in the water to survive

Water is the most important material for living organisms. (1) Living cells are 70 to 95 percent water. (2) Much of the environment of the earth is water based (about 75 percent of the earth is covered by water). (3) Water can exist in all three phases (solid, liquid and gas) and can purify itself in the “water cycle.” (4) Water has a very high specific heat (it retains heat better than most other materials). This is necessary for temperature regulation. (5) Water is the solvent (medium) for most of the chemical reactions that support live. Without water, these could not take place.

Oh, well, it only makes up about 70% of each and every human being by weight.

All life contains water. Without it, every cell would shrivel up and cease to live! It acts as a solvent for food, waste, signaling molecules, etc. It also acts as a molecular lubricant and a way to fill empty spaces.

Terrestrial life is impossible without water. Many of the vital biochemical reactions inside the cell are impossible without water.

Water provides a chemical basis for all metabolic functions.
