2. Spaghetti takes about 9 minutes to cook at sea level, but about 14 minutes in the mountains. Why do you think this is so?

Spaghetti typically takes about 9 minutes to cook at sea level, but it requires approximately 14 minutes in the mountains. What factors contribute to this difference in cooking time? Specifically, consider how the boiling point of water is affected by altitude and how this change impacts cooking processes.

water boils at a lower temperature in the mountainsExplanation:The temperature at which the vapor pressure of water is equal to atmospheric pressure is lower in the mountains, because atmospheric pressure is lower there. Hence the temperature of boiling water is lower in the mountains.Spaghetti cooked at a lower temperature takes longer to cook.

At high altitudes, air pressure is lower. That means that the boiling point of water is lower as well (lower air pressure means that water molecules need less energy to turn into gas), and because the water is boiling at a lower temperature it takes longer for it to cook the pasta.hope this helps!(:
Cooking is done at lower temperature in high altitudeExplanation: Due to high altitude in mountain compared to sea level, pressure is lower than sea level. We know, boiling of a liquid depends on external pressure. With decrease in pressure, less temperature is required to boil a liquid. Because vapour pressure of liquid becomes equal to external pressure at a lower temperature in high altitude. So, during cooking of spaghetti, lower temperature is required to boil water. Hence cooking is done at lower temperature. Hence it needs more time to be properly cooked.

This happens because of difference of pressures at sea level and in the mountains. In the mountains pressure has a lower value, so the water used to cook has a lower boiling point and it needs more time to “soften spaghetti up”.

Water boils when the vapor pressure of the water equals the atmospheric pressure that’s pressing down on it.  Water boils at a lower temperature (more easily) at higher elevations (like on mountains), because:–  Atmospheric pressure is lower at higher elevation–  Easier for vapor pressure to equal this lower atmospheric pressureSince the water boils at a lower temperature, it takes longer for the pasta to cook.

The boiling point of water is lower in higher altitudes, which means the water is boiling at a lower temperature. So the pasta takes longer to cook in higher altitudes.
