The complete excerpt says: “The January water was icy, and he reflected immediately that it was colder than he had expected to find it off the coast of Florida. This appeared to his dazed mind as a fact important enough to be noted at the time. The coldness of the water was sad; it was tragic. This fact was somehow mixed and confused with his opinion of his own situation that it seemed almost a proper reason for tears. The water was cold.” At the end in the lines “This fact was somehow mixed and confused with his opinion of his own situation that it seemed almost a proper reason for tears.” he shows how the situation makes him feel overwhelmed.

A (overwhelmed) Explanation: The last sentence says, “This fact was somehow mixed and confused with his opinion of his own situation that it seemed almost a proper reason for tears.” This shows that the guy was so sad because his situation was making him overwhelmed and want to cry.

The correct option is OVERWHELMED.To be overwhelmed means to be totally overcome in mind or feeling with a particular emotion such as sadness or remorse. In the passage given above, it is obvious that the character in the passage was already disturbed in mind by past occurrences. The fact that the weather is cold, which somehow relate to what he is going through, completely overcome his emotions to the extent that he started shedding tears.

The mood of the excerpt given above is SADNESS. From the passage given above, it can be seen that the character in the passage is in a sad mood and in his mind he also perceived that everything around him is expressing sadness, even the icy water. The character is very close to tear because of his sadness and any little reason can be enough for him to start crying.
