What kind of money does a ordinary vending machine accept in the US?

What types of coins do ordinary vending machines in the U.S. accept? I’ve tried using pennies and dimes, but the machine doesn’t count or accept them, which feels like a waste. However, it seems to work just fine with dimes and quarters. I’ve noticed that some machines don’t count money at all. Can anyone clarify which coins are typically accepted by vending machines?

Any vending machine that accepts more than one type of coin should accept nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar coins. They are all designed that way. Generally they have a shield that blocks dollar coins. Terrible idea as those are the highest value coins but few people carry them so few notice.

These machines can be programmed to only accept specific coins. This is also a bad idea. If possible you should shift your business to other machines.

Okay so the "kind" of money changes with every vending machines. Some actually accept pennies :D. If you use quarters, dimes and bills you should be mostly good though be careful some actually don't accept dimes. So keeping some bills on you and quarters you should be good to go.

The coin slot usually takes nickels, dimes, and quarters. Some take dollar coins, but older ones do not.

If the machine has a bill slot, it takes $1 bills. Some take larger bills, if the items for sale cost several dollars.

Some take credit cards.

Pennies never work. They will take nickles, dimes, and quarters, and most will have a feed slot for dollar bills.
