1. Try to notice the differences in each of the following pair of numbers:

7 to 16: +9

16 to 8: -8

8 to 27: +19

27 to 9: -18

  1. Do you see a pattern here? From 7 to 16, 9 was added; from 16 to 8, 8 was subtracted; from 8 to 27, 19 was added; from 27 to 9, 18 was subtracted.

  2. If this pattern continues, then the sixth number would be 38, which would be 9 + 29. The seventh number would be 10, or 38 - 28.

I split the sequences into two:

From: 7, 16, 8, 27, 9

to: 7, 8, 9

and: 16, 27, so the next number is 38.

Just to show you that there can be more than one LOGICAL answer for a pattern of numbers...

7, 16, 8, 27, 9,

follows this rule:

double and add 2, then take (1/2), then triple and add 3, then take (1/3), then quadruple and add 4, then ...

which would yield this pattern:

7, 16, 8, 27, 9, 40, 10, 55, 11, and so on...

Questions like these are exercises in futility !!

1. You have the sequential numbers 7,8,9. In between you have 16,27. The next number should be 11 more.

  1. 16 is 9 more than 7. 27 is 19 more than 8. If we keep adding 10, the next number should be 29 more than 9.

Either way the answer is 38.

There is more than one answer 7 8 9 10 is obvious

8 x2 =16 9x3=27 10x 4=40 11x5=55

That is not "a" pattern. It is five numbers, which could be followed by ANY number.

7, 16, 8, 27, 9, 1, .... is part of a pattern.

7, 16, 8, 27, 9, 44, ... is ALSO part of a pattern.

Also it could be

7, 16, 8, 27, 9, -3.14, ...

Or any other number you care to write.

Lots of possibilities. If its 7-8-9 and 2^4-3^3 then 4^2 is 16.
