5/8’s
The way you want to answer it is…
A) 1_1/8_2/8_3/8_4/8_5/8_6/8_7/8_2
B) 11/42/4_ l__3/4_____2
C) 1____1/2 l__2
Then look 1/2 way through # line B and C and trace your way up to number line A (the l show’s tracing)
The other method is… Make a circle and divide it into 8 parts. Now color 1/2 of the circle and 3/4’s of the circle (overlap 2/4’s over the 1/2) now forget about the parts that you overlapped (1/2) when coloring 3/4’s. Then cut the rest (1/4) in half but since it’s an 8/8 circle than there should be a line where you colored and didn’t overlap. Count all of the triangles until you get to the one in between 1/2 and 1/4. THIS MAY SOUND COMPLICATED BUT IT’S EASIER WHEN YOU DRAW IT OUT ON PAPER.
(I only used caps to show directions sorry if it bothers you)
If you find fractions easy then you can use this method.
1/2=4/8 and 3/4= 6/8 Forget about the 8… 1 2 3 (4) 5 (6) what’s in between 4 and 6?
Optional: A trick for finding equivalent (equal, same, etc.) is to find multiples of the numbers the multiples should be multiplied by the second number (denominator)
1/2: 2, (4), 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20
3/4: (4) STOP (we don’t need to go anymore but you could)
Now find 2 of the same numbers.
Break it down more look at the #’s with () around them…
1/(2): 1x(2)=2, 2x(2)=4, 3x(2)=6 ,4x(2)=8 ,5x(2)=10 etc.
3/(4): 1x(4)=4, (if I went on) 2x(4)=8 3x(4)=12 4x(4)=16
Next:
1/2×4= 4/8
3/4×4= 6/8
To multiply: simply multiple the numerator (First #) and denominator (Second #) by the number you recently got (4).
This may sound long but it’s not.
Now you can use these whenever you need to answer a question. These all sound very long and tiresome but they aren’t especially when you can do them in your head.
The answer is c. 5/8. 1/2 is equal to 4/8 and 3/4 is equal to 6/8. To answer this kind of question, you need to have the same denominator (bottom number) for both fractions. Then you use the numerators (top numbers) to determine the answer. You could first have tried 4 as your common denominator (1/2 = 2/4). In this case, the halfway point between 2 and 3 is 2.5, but you can’t write 2.5/4 as a fraction. This means you have to use another (higher) denominator. The next one that both 2 and 4 can be multiplied to get is 8. Once you have 4/8 and 6/8, it is easy to see that 5/8 is the answer, because 5 is halfway between 4 and 6.
c. 5/8.
The number half way between the two is the average of the two numbers. Find the lowest common denominator (4), convert both numbers so they have they both have the common denominator (2/4 and 3/4), add those two number together (2/4 + 3/4 = 5/4), and then divide that number by 2. 5/4 ÷ 2 is the same as 5/4 x 1/2 = 5/8
5/8, you have too find the common denominator. So what I did was turn 1/2 into 4/8, which is essentially the same thing. Then turn 3/4 into 6/8. Now we have 4/8 and 6/8, obviously 5/8 would be in between.
You have 1/2 and 3/4 right? You try to get both to the same denominator: in this case it could be 4 or 2, I suggest you 4: Then you transform 1/2: you have to multiply both 1 and 2 per 2: 2/4. Then you have 2/4 and 3/4. What is half way? 2.5/4, to get integers you multiply 2.5 and 4 per 2: You get 5/8, and that would be the answer ^_^
1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8
Have the numerator and denomenator (top and bottom #) ,multiply 4, which is 4/8
3/4 = 6/8
Have 3/4 multiply 2 = 6/8
What’s between 4 and 6?
5/8
Basically, you try to find equivalents to the fractions, and when you find the same denominators, just find the middle number for the numerator.
Hope you learn!
c
you make them have common denominators(4) so multiply 1/2 by 2/2 and then you get 2/4 and 3/4 but there is no half way so you take it up one more notch to 8 so multiply both fractions by 2 and get 4/8 and 6/8 and the middle is 5/8
