What were the advantages and disadvantages of the Eighteenth Amendment?

What were the benefits and drawbacks of the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which established Prohibition? How did it impact society, the economy, and law enforcement during its enforcement period? Additionally, what lessons can be learned from its eventual repeal through the Twenty-first Amendment?

Well, the disadvantages were obvious. Banning liquor failed to end drinking, and instead created a booming criminal subculture in which enterprising outlaws were able to make millions by selling illegal liquor. It also made criminals of ordinary, harmless human beings.

And when liquor was outlawed, there were no longer regulations in place to control the quantity of liquor. Many people died by drinking liquor that was processed incorrectly by scheming bootleggers.

But there were some advantages. If you look at how much people actually used to drink in America, it's pretty astounding. By some estimates, Prohibition managed to reduce drinking in America by abuot 30%. And the temperance movement that started a half century before helped educate people about some of the dangers of excessive drinking.

Overall, it was a pretty stupid idea to ban drinking, though, which is why Prohibition was repealed about a dozen years later.

The main disadvantage was that it did not work. And lead to an increase in crime.
