Prefix Number plates were used from the 1st August 1983 until 31st August 2001. The format used for these number plates is the prefix followed by one to three digits, followed by a space followed by three letters eg A111 AAA. A 1/8/1983 – 31/7/1984 B 1/8/1984 – 31/7/1985 C 1/8/1985 – 31/7/1986 D 1/8/1986 – 31/7/1987 E 1/8/1987 – 31/7/1988 F 1/8/1988 – 31/7/1989 G 1/8/1989 – 31/7/1990 H 1/8/1990 – 31/7/1991 J 1/8/1991 – 31/7/1992 K 1/8/1992 – 31/7/1993 L 1/8/1993 – 31/7/1994 M 1/8/1994 – 31/7/1995 N 1/8/1995 – 31/7/1996 P 1/8/1996 – 31/7/1997 R 1/8/1997 – 31/7/1998 S 1/8/1998 – 28/2/1999 T 1/3/1999 – 31/8/1999 V 1/9/1999 – 29/2/2000 W 1/3/2000 – 31/8/2000 X 1/9/2000 – 28/2/2001 Y 1/3/2001 – 31/8/2001

If the C is a prefix plate (C at the front), then that means the vehicle was registered for road use between 1st August 1985 and 31st July 1986.
If it’s a suffix plate (C at the end), then the vehicle was registered between 1st January 1965 and 31st December 1965.
This is assuming, of course, that the C reg is the original registration issued to the vehicle. It’s possible to obscure the age of the vehicle by attaching a personalised plate to it.
