where do you get bay leaves?

Are fresh bay leaves typically found in the produce section of the grocery store? Additionally, where can I find dried bay leaves?

Dried ones are in the spice section at the grocery store. I've never seen fresh ones before.

Bay leaf comes from the laurel tree. I usually find fresh bay leaves at the grocery store along with the other fresh herbs or at the local Farmer's Market.

Ive never seen fresh bay leaves either maybe an asian grocer might sell them fresh. Dry bay leaves are quite easily found in the spice section of your local supermarket they come in a packet of 20 or so. quite cheap.

The dried ones are in a jar in the spice aisle. Fresh ones are a bit trickier to find. Go to the biggest yuppie store you have. They're packaged up in the produce section in plastic containers along with pre-packaged basil, oregano, chives, etc...

If you find the fresh ones, you won't want to go back to dried!

Just for a bit of knowledge....

Bay leaf in Greek Daphni (plural bay leaves) is the aromatic leaf of several species of the Laurel family (Lauraceae).

Fresh or dried bay leaves are used in cooking for their distinctive flavor and fragrance.

Laurus nobilis, is a culinary herb often used to flavor soups, stews, and braises and pâtés in Mediterranean Cuisine. The fresh leaves are very mild and do not develop their full flavor until several weeks after picking and drying.

California bay leaf

The leaf of the California bay tree (Umbellularia californica), also known as 'California laurel', 'Oregon myrtle', and 'pepperwood', is similar to the Mediterranean bay but has a stronger flavor.

"Indian bay leaf" (also tej pat, tejpat, or tejpata)

The leaf of the Cinnamomum tejpata (malabathrum) tree is similar in fragrance and taste to cinnamon bark, but milder. In appearance, it is similar to the other bay leaves but is culinarily quite different, having an aroma and flavor more similar to that of Cassia. It is inaccurately called a bay leaf as it is of a different genus (though the same family) as the bay laurel.

Not sure about fresh - never seen them for sale. Dried at the herb and spice section of your market, or perhaps an international section if they have one. Maybe try growing your own tree - foodie friends will love you!
