which car is better between wagon R Lxi and Santro XL in terms of mileage?

Which car offers better mileage: the Wagon R LXi or the Santro XL? I am looking for a comparison of their fuel efficiency, as well as any other relevant factors that might influence my decision.

Hyundai being the underdogs is always the first to offer better features such as MPFI engine and ABS. They also tend to be more aggressive and Maruti dealers have the take it or leave it attitude.

Maruti has a bigger service network and the cost of spares it cheaper.

Both cars are tall boy model and have high seating. This add to driving/seating comfort and makes it easy for people to get in and get out.

Here is the comparison.

Santro Pros:

Better Looks (as compared to Wagon-R).

More comfortable to Drive.

Better Service.

Better Pickup.

Provision for 4 speakers, Wagon-R has provision for only 2.

Perceived to be more expensive.

Air conditioning more effective hence cooling is better.

Ability to adjust the side view mirrors from inside.

Seat belts for 5 passengers, Wagon-R has only 4. Santro is also approved for 5 people and Wagon-R has got approval for only 4 passengers. Not that anyone ever checks but still.

Wagon-R Pros:

Better resale value.

Cheaper cost of spares.

Bigger service network than Hyundai.

Slightly more fuel efficient. Although now Santro has new eRLX engine which is suppose to have improved mileage.

Better Engine and electronic power steering.

Cheaper.

Option for Airbags (only available in the top of the line model).

Slightly more leg space and better comfort for tall people.

The seats can be dropped completed to create a bed or even a double bed. Useful while traveling and someone can sleep.

I also suggest that irrespective of which car you decide to buy, don’t compromise on safety. Pay that extra for ABS and Airbags (only in Wagon-R).

good luck!

Well, both are similarly priced and have similar power, both are very competent cars. But the main difference is Santro’s engine is more responsive, refined, has more torque and is much quicker of the block than the Wagon R, so the Santro is quicker to 0-60 km/hr times. The brakes on the Santro too has better bite than the Wagon R, and also it’s more stable at high speeds. The fuel efficiency is a tad better in the Santro. The build quality too is generally better in the Santro. Though the Wagon R is taller than the Santro, it does n’t translate into much interior room in the Wagon R. But the Wagon R has a bigger boot, and airbags as optional. Santro has a stiffer suspension, so back seat may not be as comfortable as the Wagon R on bad roads. But the steering and gear box are better and smoother in the Santro. You can expect less body roll in the Santro. And of course it looks better too. Being a Santro Xing owner,I have realised the beauty of its perky engine and it’s agility due to it’s responsive power steering, esp in the city. It’s turning circle too is tighter than that of the Wagon R. The Santro is a reliable, quality car overall.

Mileage:

On Highway :Wagon R Lxi Gives 17 km/liter

Santro XL gives 16.8 km/liter

In City :Wagon R Lxi gives 11.9 km/liter

Santro XL gives 11.8 km/liter

Overall :Wagon R Lxi gives 12.9 km/liter

Santro XL gives 12.7 km/liter

Therefore in terms of mileage Wagon R Lxi is quite better…

I would say go for the santro, owned one for 3 years not once did it give any reliability issues, easy to manoeuvre in traffic thanks to its peppy engine and good gearbox. The tall boy design helps in ease of getting in and out (definately good for the elderly). The easy to own experience is just as good as Maruti’s. There is nothing wrong with the Wagon R except for the notchy gearbox, there might be a new Wagon R coming next year in the form of Suzuki Splash, this is definately worth waiting for and it is also coming with diesel variant (same engine which is currently there in the swift diesel)

The WagonR is better in terms of fuel efficiency, but only marginal. If you go for the LPG WangonR the running cost will come down even more.
