Why does yogurt taste sour? I thought it is sweet?

Why does yogurt have a sour taste when I thought it was sweet? I'm curious about the fermentation process and the factors that contribute to its flavor profile. Can you explain why some yogurts taste tangy, while others are sweeter?

Yogurt is sour because it contains lactic acid which also gives it its distinctive taste. Yogurt is only sweet if sugar or artificial sweeteners are added.

Yogurt is naturally sour because it is a fermented milk product. The more fermentation, the more sourness. Fresh yogurt when made right should taste sweet and sour in a mild way.

Commercially produced yogurt has a lot of additives to control the tartness.

In India yogurt is an important part of our daily diet, nearly every home sets a fresh dish for the next meal. Newly set natural yogurt tastes bland yet pleasantly fresh, but never sweet.Being a culture of acidobacillus it continues to get more sour as time passes, very sour yogurt is used in indian cuisine to ferment various batters & as a base for many curries. In summer, watered down, spiced sour yogurt is served as a refreshing drink.Any sweet yogurt is artificially sweetened, same goes for flavor.

Plain yogurt doesn’t contain sugar or flavoring, so in its natural state it will taste less sweet.

Natural or plain youghurt has a sourish taste. Many of the sugared flavoured fruit or chocolate yoghurts are very sweet but they aren’t plain yoghurt and have sweetners and other ingredients added.

The yogurt in France (not low-fat, not chemicalized) is smooth and sweet.

Natural plain yoghurt is cultured (sour) milk.

What you buy with fruit in it, is sweetened.
