Why is it called a “bye” week?

The term is usually used in the context of a tournament, and usually an elimination tournament at that. For instance, if you have 33 teams and pair them up, one is left without a competitor and advances to the next round without facing an opponent. The NFL has what might be called a modified round-robin (I know, there’s your next question) tournament. Round-robin because you play without risk of elimination for the regular season. Modified because you do not face each opponent once and only once as in a true round-robin, but some twice and some not at all, and also because the system changes at a point (start of the play-offs) to an elimination format, modified itself to allow byes for the best four teams in the first round. According to the reference below, the term bye started out as a cricket term in 1746 and is a variant of the preposition by. It meant what we baseball folk would call a passed ball that allows a runner to score. Seems it had the sense of getting BY the wicket keeper (catcher) allowing the batsman (runner on third) to score a run without any actual opposition. Perhaps it had an element of the wicket keeper saying bye (like good-bye) when the ball passes him. I bet it was meant to denigrate the wicket keeper more than anything.
