Why is pri-state tax deducted from my paycheck?

I noticed that my recent paycheck includes a deduction for Pri-state tax, which was not present in my previous paychecks. During the biweekly pay period of this paycheck, I worked overtime. Although I have a minimum wage job, I wonder if this new tax deduction is related to the additional income from my overtime hours and how it affects my overall gross pay. Can someone help clarify why this deduction has appeared now?

Pri-state means tax withholding for your primary state. For example in my state (IL) there is a $2000 per person exemption before state tax is charged, so with one allowance on state W-4 they would not start withholding state tax until income was over $2000. Your state may have something similar.

If you lived in one state and lived in another there might also be a separate entry for the secondary state.

Percentage of Wages (Primary Method)

Yes it very well could be related to the additional overtime pay for this purpose.

But to get the correct answer you really should contact your employer payroll department and ask them very nicely and politely to PLEASE help you to understand this Pri-state tax deducted $ amount to you so that you can understand what it is about and then after they do this you should THANK them very nicely and politely for taking this time to clear the matter up for you at this time in your life.

Hope that you find the above enclosed information useful. 07/31/2011
