The salt cellar was not created for church use. Cellini made this for Francis I of France, although he proposed to craft this for a cardinal of the church. The cardinal only rejected it based on cost.

The 16th century Roman Catholic Church really didn't care about the decorations in the homes of the rich and powerful.
