Will VGA to HDMI converter display my laptop screen onto my TV screen?
I have an Acer laptop purchased in 2006 with a VGA connection and a Toshiba big screen TV bought in the same year with an HDMI connection. I want to display my laptop screen on my TV. I connected them using a VGA to HDMI adapter cable ($8), but it didn’t work. Does anyone know if a VGA to HDMI converter ($40) will successfully convert the analog signal from my laptop to a digital signal for the TV, including both video and audio? Alternatively, I also have S-Video connections on both devices. Can the S-Video connection achieve the desired result?

S-video is the cheap option, and will work, but is usually limited to 800×600 resolution or so.
Whoever sells VGA to HDMI cables should be banned. You can’t use a simple cable to convert from analog (VGA) to digital (HDMI).
The converters work, at least to some degree, but not on all TVs. $40 converters from ebay are a gamble.

As has been said VGA is analogue and HDMI is digital so no easy conversion. The converters I have seen but not tried are a lot more than $40.But who am I to say it wont work. Give details and might be able to comment on it a bit more.
Is your TV an HD tv because all HD tv’s to my knowledge have a VGA input.
If not then you are stuck with S-video. VGA and S-video do not carry sound signal so you will have to get a 3.5mm jack plug to RCA connection to get sound. Plug from sound out or headphone out to corresponding rca connections on tv
I used a VGA to HDMI and it worked fine for me. My best recommendation is to bring your laptop to radioshack and ask the guys there if it will work for your specific laptop. They always seem to know best about that kinda stuff and often answers you find online will be misleading. Also, if you do buy a cord from them and it doesn’t work you can get your full amount of money back. And no, I don’t work for radioshack haha.

Just buy a TV with a VGA input. There are lots of models to chose and it is the ONLY Thing that works. Any converter will cost you far more, so again, make sure the TV you buy has a VGA input port.
