An empty Erlenmeyer flask weighs 241.3 g. When filled with water (density = 1.00 g/cm³), the combined weight of the flask and its contents is 489.1 g. What is the volume of the flask? Additionally, how much does the flask weigh when filled with chloroform (density = 1.48 g/cm³)?

flask volume =247.8 cm³total weight = 608.044 gExplanation:Part a.Data Given: weight of the flask = 241.3 gweight of water and flask = 489.1 gdensity of water = 1 g/cm³Solution:As we know that the volume of the Erlenmeyer flask is the volume of water that occupied by it. for this first we have to find mass of the water in the Erlenmeyer flaskThis can be calculated by the subtraction of flask's weight from the weight of flask and water.       weight of water (m) = total weight  - weight of flaskput values in the above formula       weight of water (m) = 489.1 g -  241.3 g       weight of water (m) = 489.1 g -  241.3 g       weight of water (m) = 247.8 gTo find volume we will use density formula        d = m/vrearrange the above equation to calculate volume        v = m/d . . .  . . . . (1)put values in equation 1         v = 247.8 g / 1 g/cm³         v = 247.8 cm³The volume of the Erlenmeyer flask = 247.8 cm³Part b.Data Given:density of ethanol = 1.48 g/cm³mass of the flask when filled with ethanol = ?Solution:To find mass we will use density formula        d = m/vrearrange the above equation to calculate mass        m = d x v . . .  . . . . (2)The volume of ethanol is equal to the volume of Erlenmeyer flask that is calculated in part 1 So,Volume of ethanol = 247.8 gPut values in formula 2        m = 1.48 g/cm³ x 247.8 g        m = 366.744 gNow,To calculate total mass of the flask when filled with ethanol.        total weight = weight of Erlenmeyer flask + weight of ethanolPut the value in above equation        total weight = 366.744 g + 241.3 g        total weight = 608.044 gSo Total weight of flask and ethanol = 608.044 g

The volume of the flask would simply be equal to thevolume of the water. And the mass of the water would be the difference afterand before weigh. mass of water = 489.1 g – 241.3 gmass of water = 247.8 g Therefore the volume of water (which is also the volumeof the flask) is:volume = 247.8 g / (1.00 g/cm^3)volume = 247.8 cm^3 The total mass of the flash when filled with chloroformwould be:total mass with chloroform = 241.3 g + 247.8 cm^3 (1.48g/cm3)total mass with chloroform = 608.04 g  Answers:volume = 247.8 cm^3total mass with chloroform = 608.04 g
