Belgian Malinois – how to recognize characteristics in a mixed puppy?

Hi! I’m planning to adopt a male Belgian Malinois and Labrador Retriever mixed puppy, and there are seven black male puppies to choose from. They are currently 3 weeks old and look quite similar based on the picture. I would like to know if it’s possible, even at this early age, to determine if they will resemble more of the Labrador or the Belgian Malinois in terms of head and body shape. I’m hoping to select the one that has pointed ears and a body posture similar to that of a Belgian Malinois. Here’s a reference image for comparison: http://houndandthefound.files.wordpress.com/2012/1… If anyone has experience with this, I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance! 🙂

I have owned, trained and worked Malinois for 35 years. I know that Malinois tend to pass off strong genes, but, when bred to another dog to produce mutts, there is no way to know at this age what the pups will look like when they are older.

If I were you, I would be much more concerned with what this dog will be like temperament wise rather then what it will look like. Malinois can make your life a living hell if they are the wrong dog for you or you have the wrong personality for the dog. Out of curiosity, what is the reason you are buying this particular mix?

Hi!

I'm going to adopt a male belgian malinois – black labrador retriever mixed puppy and there are 7 black male puppies to choose from. Right now, they are 3 weeks old and look all the same, judging by the picture. I would like to know is it possible (even this early) to see if they will look…

Even as puppies, you should have a rough idea of the temperaments of the puppies. They have these puppy tests that they run on tiny pups to figure out if the pup will be dominant, submissive, etc. You can google that. Basing which pup to get off of it’s looks isn’t a great idea and I personally would never do something like that.

Just totally agree with Greek…. and can’t see the advantages of the mix tbh. Just hope it doesn’t have the worst of both.

Be concerned with the temperament and not the looks.
