Can MiraLAX Cause Diarrhea?

I took MiraLAX for 3 days because I was constipated for 5 days. On the fourth day, I had a decent sized bowel movement, so I didn’t take it that day. I didn’t take it the next day (yesterday), either; however, at about 4:00 I had a case of Diarrhea. It hit me again at about 9:00. I had a little bit this morning at 9:30. Can this be a result of the MiraLAX? I didn’t overdose. I took the amount it told me to on the bottle and I only took one dose a day…for three days. It says it can be taken up to a week, but I haven’t used it since Sunday. Advice?

Mira lax is a drug used for constipation. If taken too much it can cause diarrhea. Too much is defined as taking 4 liters of it. There are other products called NuLYTELY and GoLYTELY in which patients take the entire 4 liters (ingest 8 oz every 10 minutes) until gone to clean out the intestines before undergoing a colonoscopy. (A procedure to look into the large and a small portion of the small intestines.) If take Miralax as directed on the bottle, you should not expereince diarrhea. That being said, keep in mind, everyone has a different body and what you may need, may be more than what another person may need. So for example, you may need 2 tablespoons to get you going where as others may need 3. You will need to play with the dose to determine what is the best. Miralax is safe and has minimal side effects.

That first “normal” stool was the “blockage” cruzin out. Now, the rest of it is passing through. You should “firm” up with in a day or two. Watch what your eating so that you don’t consume foods that normally pass through you quickly. Be sure to keep hydrated.
