The JKL tattoo meaning was not established in the movie. It could represent the famous motto "Just Keep Living," or a combination of the initials of the character played by Johnny Messner as Kelly Lake - J(ohnny) K(elly) L(ake).
Messner has several tattoos, including a large eagle with a five-pointed star on the side, an American eagle, an angel from the seventeenth century, and some Japanese inscriptions.
Johnny Messner was born on April 11, 1970, in Syracuse, New York, USA. In addition to Tears of the Sun (2003), he is also known for Running Scared (2006) and Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid (2004).
