can you make strawberry rhubarb pie without tapioca?

I would like to make a strawberry rhubarb pie, but I don't have any tapioca. Is it possible to make this pie without using tapioca, and if so, what alternatives can I use to achieve a similar texture and consistency?

I never make this pie with tapioca, in fact I don’t make anything with tapioca. I use cornstarch. Flour would not cook well enough and taste sorta’ raw. The cornstarch cooks quickly and creates a fine gelatinous texture.

If you can buy some, you can make this recipe:

http://www.easyrhubarbrecipes.com/strawberry-rhuba…

I know it contains tapioca but I am sharing the link because is my favorite strawberry rhubarb pie recipe and it’s well worth making.

If you do not want to use tapioca you can use cornstarch instead. Tapioca is a staple food in some countries. It’s a starch and a thickening agent which is protein and gluten-free.

Simply replace the tapioca in the above recipe (or in your chosen strawberry rhubarb pie recipe) with an equal amount of cornstarch and the pie will come out exactly the same.

Cornstarch is a good substitute. I usually use half tapioca flour, and half cornstarch, because I like the texture of tapioca flour (I don’t use pearl tapioca, though, like most people, because I don’t like the rubbery texture of the cooked pearls, but the tapioca flour gives the filling a great firm texture, better than plain cornstarch; you can find tapioca flour in Oriental grocery stores).

I think you could substitute tapioca with flour or cornstarch. I would google substitutes, but I’m sure I’ve used flour in pies before as well as tapioca. Good luck!
