Confused about Neon Genesis Evangelion, please explain!?
I recently watched Neon Genesis Evangelion on animefreak.tv, and I found the series particularly confusing, especially the last couple of episodes. I've heard there are three movies related to the series, and I'm about to watch "The End of Evangelion," but I suspect it might still be puzzling for me. This series has been one of the most perplexing I've ever encountered.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone could explain the entire series and the movies. Alternatively, if there are any websites that break it down for people who are confused, that would be helpful too. Additionally, I find the backstory quite hard to follow—specifically, where the Angels originate from and what the two significant events (which I can't recall the name of but think of as massive explosions) mean for humanity's fate. If anyone could clarify the series for me, I would be extremely grateful. Thank you!

Neon Genesis Evangelion is definitely a series that you cannot watch once and expect to fully understand. It’s also the reason why it is so revered; the complex plot is really deep when you fully understand.
Basically, the last few episodes were the Human Instrumentality Project and it made people reflect on themselves to see if the accept or reject it. Some of the characters accepted and some rejected for reasons that I don’t remember.
Gendo Ikari and Rei Ayanami were the two who initiated the process, asking if they would accept or reject. Gendo accepts it because he wants to see his wife again and he needs Rei to help him because she has DNA from Lilith (2nd angel), who took Adam’s place and gave birth to all the human’s on Earth, and now has the ability to restart life on Earth. In the end, Rei rejects Gendo Ikari and turns to Shinji, giving him the power to decide the fate of humanity.
Then something happens, and Shinji starts 3rd Impact and he and Asuka become the next Adam and Eve on Earth to restart life.
1st and 2nd Impact were the times when the Angel’s attacked Earth and succeeded in wiping out a large portion of the population. 1st Impact was billions of years ago and it was the meteor that started life on Earth. 2nd Impact happened only a few years before the start of the anime timeline. Adam, the first Angel, attacked Earth in an attempted to wipe out life on Earth. He landed in Antarctica and wasn’t able to out life on Earth. It was covered up by the media saying a meteor hit.
If I’m not mistaken (which I probably am), the Angel’s are attacking the humans because they have the “Fruit of Wisdom” which they received from being the children of Lilith. The angels have the “Fruit of Life”. And that story goes back to the story of how Adam and Eve and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge and stuff.
The last two episodes are meant to be confusing. No one has a complete explanation for what’s going on there, not even the people who made the show. Supposedly they’re visual representations of what’s going on inside the characters’ minds during Instrumentality. Instrumentality is apparently some sort of mystical sci-fi process in which all human minds are merged together, so that no one can hide anymore and everyone is finally able to understand everyone else. In those episodes we see this collective mind ‘examining’ or even ‘interrogating’ certain characters from the show. The entire show was about how the characters try to disguise their weaknesses and bottle up their fears and how they suffered as a result. Gendo planned out Instrumentality so that there would be no more barriers between people, no more deception and denial, and no one would have to suffer like that anymore. Everyone in Evangelion has an inferiority complex, thinking everyone else was better than them and simultaneously trying to be better than everyone else. In the end, with the ‘congratulations’ thing and all that, we’re to understand that with the barriers between them gone, everyone has realized that everyone was merely human all along and they all sympathize with each other’s flaws rather than living in the fear of being judged. Or at least that’s how I interpreted it. Although Evangelion is often described as ‘freudian’ (and there is more than a little of that), I actually think Instrumentality and the ending actually more closely parallel the philosophy of Georg Hegel, wherein things exist not so much in themselves, but by affecting other things and being affected by them, and in particular, human consciousness exists by recognizing other consciousness and simultaneously forcing other consciousness to recognize it in turn.
I did watch End of Evangelion as well. And although it actually had a budget to run on, I didn’t particularly like it. The TV show may not end the way it sets itself up to end, but it at least provides some closure, a sense that the characters did finally achieve something. End of Evangelion on the other hand throws away that sense of closure and simply turns into a colossal mindscrew. It’s as if Gainax looked at the last two episodes of the TV show and decided they were too thematic and not bizarre enough.

The Last 2 episodes were about Instrumentality.

The last few episodes were iffy cause that’s not the way it was supposed to end. Everything makes sense if you watch the movie ending END OF EVANGELION. What happened in the last two episodes is the interview with the character to see if they accepted or rejected instrumentality. With it all the characters they had to come to a realization of oneself and if the others around them. The meaning was different for all of them. Rei realized she is a real person, and wanted instrumentality, Misato wanted to see Kaji again so she accepts, Asuka denies it cause she doesn’t want mother anymore, and Shinji rejects. The reason they are congratulating him is cause he realized he never was truley alone and the decision he made was the correct decision for him. They are in everyone else’s consciousness ( to tell the truth without giving much away everyone has merged into a giant single being)
GO WATCH END OF EVANGELION!!!!! It is the only way to understand what is going on.

RE:
Confused about Neon Genesis Evangelion, please explain!?
Ok so I have watched the episodes the one I found on animefreak.tv. And I already found the last couple of episodes confusing, but especially the last two were really confusing. I also found out that there were 3 or so movies as well and I am about to watch “The End of Evangelion” but I…
The last two episodes was actually like a test. Gendo and Rei initiated the Human Instrumentality Project, which made many of the characters including Shinji to face their doubts and fears and examine their self-worth, with sequences that “suggest schizophrenia”. In the end, Shinji concluding that life could be worth living and that he did not need to pilot an Eva to justify his existence; he is then surrounded by most of the cast, clapping and congratulating him. The introduction implies that this same process took place for everyone.
The movie “The End of Evangelion” is not as confusing as the last 2 episodes. They are also Remaking the series into 4 movies. Only 2 are out so far and the 3rd installment is coming out here soon.
The Angels are Angels. The Eva Units are part angel, that is why they can fight against the Angels. Shinji’s Eva Unit is special. They are trying to fight against the Angels so they won’t go extinct. Yeah, that is what 1st and 2nd Impact were. You get to see a 3rd Impact in the movie. You get to see what happens to them, why they did what they did.
I love it, I highly suggest it, though its not for everyone.
This is probably not going to help because it is so jumbled up, but here it goes.
There is a race of progenitors who disburse seeds called the fruit of life and the fruit of knowledge to other planets so life continues. They make it so that if both the seeds land on the same planet, the seeds pretty much negate each other and turn into LCL, the blood of angels. This is to stop the creation of beings which are stronger than themselves. The fruit of knowledge creates beings like humans and the fruit of life creates beings like the angels. Adam is an angel which is the fruit of life and Lilith is the angel which is the fruit of wisdom.
Adam started the creation of angels. Lilith then also landed on earth and Lilith’s spear of longinus was destroyed in the crash to earth. The spear of longinus was created by the progenitors to stop the merge of both the fruit of life and the fruit of knowledge. Because Lilith’s spear of longinus was destroyed, Adam’s spear automatically impaled him, leaving him in a dormant state, unable to create any beings.
Lilith is under the nerv headquarters impaled with the spear of longinus. Adam was frozen in the snow of Antarctica but when humans tried to capture him (it), Adam instantly put up an AT field which “exploded” Antarctica. This was called the second impact. This apparently caused Adam to”open the gates of souls”. Theories include that Adam laid eggs billions of years ago and after the second impact, he gave them souls or that during the second impact, parts of him came off and became the monsters called angels.
There are two organizations called seele and nerv. Both of their goals are the same and that is to make the “impact” or “human instrumentality project” to happen. Seele wants this to happen so everyone turns into LCL so nobody suffers and there is no sin and hatred in the world. Gendo, the head of NERV, wants this to happen so he can be reunited with his wife (who still has a soul because she was absorbed into eva unit 01, a monster which Nerv is able to restrain with technology).
Eva unit 00 is created after many failed attempts and is controlled by Rei, a clone of Gendo’s wife. Their synchronisation rate is very low because the Eva and Rei have no psychological connections like the other two evas. Unit 01 absorbed Shinji’s mother and unit 02 partially absorbed Asuka’s mother and so, they are able to synchro with the evas with a stronger connection. (this means that they are better at controlling their evas but can also feel more of the pain which the eva feels). Unit 01 is a child/creation of Adam and unit 00 and unit 02 are children of Lilith.
The angels (children of Adam) try to penetrate the nerv headquarters to come into contact with Lilith to either destroy all of mankind and Lilith or to start the human instrumentality project. I believe most people in the anime series thought that angels coming into contact with Lilith meant the end of mankind, but the higher ups like Gendo knew that it meant the human instrumentality project would commence. Thus most people fought to save humankind and Gendo and some others fought to be able to choose when the human instrumentality project would happen.
Okay, I have no idea how Lilith got impaled by the spear and I know there will be wrong stuff. I don’t know how exactly the human instrumentality project is intended to start and somebody help pls.
It’s meant to be confusing, so don’t worry. Some questions are left unanswered, so there’s no way to clear it up.

Nothing… it becomes a weird dream/death sequence. The ending blows big time. It made the rest of a decent series feel like I had wasted my life on it. They tried to get all psychological at the end and FAILED miserably.
