Dexron III fluid vs. Dexron II-one in the same?

My car requires Dexron II fluid, but I’ve noticed that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find. Instead, I see a lot of Dexron III available in stores. Occasionally, I come across jugs labeled as Dexron II/III fluid. Is Dexron III a newer equivalent to Dexron II? Recently, my car’s transmission was slightly low on fluid, so I added Dexron III, even though the manual specifies Dexron II. Is this a suitable choice?

Dexron III simply meets a higher standard. Yes you can.

My car calls for Dexron II but I hardly see this sold anymore but I do see plenty of Dexron III out there in stores, I have occasionally seen jugs of Dexron II/III fluid for sale so is Dexron III a newer equivalent of Dexron II? My car’s transmission was a hair low on fluid so I added Dexron…

chevy dipsticks are notorious for getting rusty, it has nothing to do with your transmission. It could be two things causing your problem, the pan could be leaking and or the transmission fluid could be going through the vaccumm modulator ( i have acutally seen this happen) though it is rare. With your truck being 21 years old it is probably not a good idea changing your filter unless you want to do it twice (after 1000 miles)the tarnish could plug up your new filter. GOOD LUCK

Yes you can use dexron III in transmissions that calls for dextron II, but you cant do it the other way around. Cant use dexron II in transmissions that calls for dexron III

Thats why your finding it harder to get dexron II. It’s being phased out as it’s no longer needed
