Alliteration is the repetition of the same sound or letter at the beginning of each or most of the words in a sentence. The easiest way to use alliteration is to repeat the starting letter of the words.

A very famous example of alliteration comes from Edgar Allan Poe’s poem The Raven. Its first line is: “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary…” The alliterative words here are “once,” “while,” “weak,” and “weary.” Notice that to be alliterative, they don’t all have to start with the same letter(s), just the same sound. The device of alliteration runs throughout The Raven.

Alliteration is frequently used in poetry, but it can also be used in prose, such as novels or plays. Depending on how alliteration is used in the text, it can have a different impact on the meaning of the text or how the reader experiences it.
