Do giraffes have vocal chords?

I have heard that giraffes are unable to produce any vocal sounds. Is this true? If so, what anatomical features contribute to their vocal capabilities, or lack thereof?

No giraffes do not have vocal cords but that the myth that the animal can not make any sounds is simply what it is a myth.

The animals can make a variety of noises anything from grunts to even some “moo” like sounds, they can make a bleating sound, similar to that of a young calf or sheep.

And even low fluttering sounds.

If you ask any zookeeper they will tell you that giraffes are generally quiet but they WILL make noises

Sorry “King,” but Giraffes absolutely have vocal cords. Vocalizations just happen to be one of the many uses useful things about vocal cords and all mammals have them. While giraffes are usually quiet they have been known to make bleating or yelping sounds.

King is right. I’ve seen video of a running wild giraffe being lassoed around its neck (the video was probably from the 1970’s). It let out quite a bellow when the rope tightened.
