The circa 1920s Vitapulser is a battery-operated medical device that was used to stimulate the body's nerves with an electrical current through a sponge pad.

You can see a picture of the Vitapulser along with its instruction manual here.

The manual suggested that it be applied to various parts of the body to stimulate blood circulation. Doing this was said to relieve headaches, colds, rheumatoid arthritis, sore throat, sore muscles and strains, gout, indigestion, constipation, paralysis, deafness, toothaches, insomnia, fatigue, as well as liver, kidney, and complexion problems.

Of interest, old-time cures are making a comeback. Leeches are being used in India and other countries to treat arthritis, vertigo, gout, acne, and sinusitis. Hypnotherapy, first made popular in the 1700s, is now being used in the U.S. to treat addictions, obesity, anxiety, asthma, and insomnia.

In other alternative medicine news, new research suggests that massage therapy may help relieve pain in those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis or metastatic cancer, as well as in individuals who have undergone post-cardiac surgery.
