Does braiding your hair make it longer?
I've noticed that my friend's hair seemed to grow remarkably fast after she braided it for a couple of weeks and then straightened it. She insists that all she did was braid her hair! I've decided to try this for myself and have been french braiding my hair both at night and during the day for the last couple of days. My hair was exactly shoulder length, but after showering today and pulling it down, I think it looks a bit longer! I’m not sure if this length will be noticeable when it’s dry, but it has me excited! So, does braiding hair actually help it grow, or is there something else going on?

if you are trying to grow hair faster please follow my tips!!! There is too much misinformation on YA and some of it is down right dangerous to follow. BA is often by votes that non hair stylists & beginners vote on so they are not reliable. Many times BA is chosen by the asker because it is what they WANT to hear & not the correct information. I answer mostly to help young teens from getting hair damaged but it seems to be a loosing battle. There are people on this site calling themselves professionals that aren’t no real working professional has the time to be a top contributor on this site! Well it depends on:
-Genetics
-How much heat you put on your hair
-How often you wash hair
-What you do with hair on a regular basis
-What Shampoo & Conditioner you use
-etc.
On average, hair grows 1.25cm per week, an average of 1/2 inch per month to the maximum of an inch.
With heated styling tools a lot slower!
I made the mistake of cutting my hair really short awhile back, but it only took me a couple months to grow it back long. ( It is down to my rib cage now.)
This is what I did to grow it back out:
– Massage your head whenever you get the chance. This will stimulate the roots of your hair causing it to grow.
– Eat your fruits, nuts, and vegetables and drink lots of water! The nutrients will make your hair shiny and healthy, which will also promote growth.
– Don’t straighten your hair or curl it with an iron! This will only break and damage your hair and prevent it from growing.
– Try not to blow dry your hair if possible. Let it air dry when you can.
– If you absolutely can’t live without your heat products (flat irons, curling irons, blow dryers, etc.) make sure to ALWAYS use heat protection before you use them.
– While in the shower, don’t use shampoo every day. Use it every other day to every 3 days. Use conditioner EVERYDAY or EVERY TIME you wash your hair.
– Another shower trick! When you put conditioner in, squeeze out your hair first. Then rub it throughout your hair. This will make it easier for your hair to soak up the moisture and vitamins in the conditioner.
– Another shower trick!!! Wash / condition your hair FIRST before you wash your body. Keep the conditioner in and clip it up for the rest of the time you are in the shower, and rinse when you are about to get out.
– Wash / rinse your hair with COLD or cool water. Hot water (and just heat in general) is BAD for your hair.
– Use products that will strengthen your hair or say something like “Moisturizing” on them.
– Don’t brush your hair when it’s wet. This can break your hair. Use a wide toothed comb instead, and try using leave in conditioner before you comb it through.
– Be careful and gentle when taking out knots/snarls.
– Be careful when you brush your hair.
– Use hot oil treatments when you have the chance.
– Don’t sleep with your hair up. This can cause breakage.
– Use an old cotton T-shirt to dry your hair instead of a towel.
– In the summer, be careful of the sun. It can dry out your hair and make it damaged and brittle.
– Don’t get in the habit of dying your hair. If you already do, make sure you don’t bleach your hair.
Good luck growing out your hair! If you follow these tips you will have long beautiful hair in no time. 🙂

Nope, simply an urban myth. However, what braiding does do — which is good for the hair — is pull the scalp a little while braiding (good for circulation) and generally braiding helps keep hairs from breaking, or being pulled out as much from frequent combing or brushing, so the hair will stay thicker looking, and might even appear to grow longer faster as few hairs are being lost/breaking off.
Braiding as in cornrows will definitely make your hair grow..I started seeing how athletes and rappers were doing their hair and their hair was growing like crazy. I can’t wear or use relaxers on my hair-it takes my hair right out and I was even told by a dermatologist that the cornrows was a good alternative along with not relaxing my hair and now my hair is long…now don’t get me wrong with what the first poster said-you do have to do some health care maintenance from within (eating right, drinking water, taking vitamins, etc.)
It really all depends on how well your hair can grow with either chemicals or naturally…
Braiding does make your hair longer, I think, because I braid my hair when I get out of the shower and I have noticed it grow a lot longer. I have also read about it and have heard that it does help it grow longer, faster.
Braiding does not lengthen your hair, it just protects it from the elements. To have longer hair NEVER blow-dry or use any heat in your hair. Drink a lot of water, it helps with moisturizing. Purchase an anti-frizz hair serum… since it is used to treat frizz it has a lot of deep conditioning oils in it you can use on your hair tips to avoid split ends. Trim your hair whenever your split ends bother you and eat a lot of sunflower kernels! It may sound weird, but they actually help A LOT to produce keratin which means you will get longer nails and hair at the same time!
