Find the change in S° for the formation of one mole PCl5(g)

Calculate the change in standard entropy (ΔS°) for the formation of one mole of PCl5(g) from its elements, using white phosphorus (P4) as the reactant. The values you will need are as follows: ΔS° of PCl5(g) = 353 J/K, ΔS° of P4(s) = 41.1 J/K, and ΔS° of Cl2(g) = 153.25 J/K.

omg i just had this test today too!!!!!

u use hess's law to find the change--->write the equation, balance it

and then use the moles (coefficients) to multiply the change is s for each element.

hess's law says that the change in s (or h, or G, its usable for any of the thermo concepts) is equal to the sum of the entropy of the products minus the sum of the entropy of the reactants. its pretty easy after that--just plug in the values and there you go!

good luck! this was a hard test for me..so confusing.

First the equation

P + Cl = PCl5

Balance it

P + 5Cl = PCl5

Next conform it to the change in S equations.

P4 + 25Cl = 4(PCl5)

Now insert the equations to find the change in S and change in S of subtract products - change in S of reactants.

I forgot to say remember to reconvert you answer back to how much one mole of PCl5 is by dividing your answer by 4.
