Getting a permanent profile?
I have served in the Army for 14 years, mostly in an enlisted capacity, and my knees have finally given out. I am now a new CPT, and my orthopedic doctor has indicated that the only option is a permanent profile. As I am in the Armor branch, having healthy knees is crucial for my job. I don't want to be the person who cannot perform at 100%. Has anyone gone through a similar situation? Are there any options, such as medical retirement? I have invested too many years to simply walk away without some form of retirement, but I also feel uncomfortable being a leader who can't lead from the front. The bureaucracy makes it challenging to get clear answers without visiting multiple offices and speaking to numerous people.

Ultimately, sir, you’ll have to decide with your doctor what you can and cannot do and that will be annotated on your profile. After that, you’ll go before a medical review board. They will determine whether you can continue in your current job, based on the doc’s recommendation, your testimony, and the Army’s requirements for your branch.
Your destiny is largely in your hands here, sir. Most of the docs that I’ve dealt with will take your recommendations, but make sure you deal straight with them. Don’t tell them you can still carry a 40-pound ruck if that’s no longer the case.
Best of luck to you, sir. I hope you get the result that you want.
A permanent profile is not going to get you a discharge. If you do have a valid medical problem go see the medics by going to sick call. If you are faking you can get an Article 15. If you are having issues go see the chaplain. You need to make the best of your situation because you aren’t going anywhere no time soon.
ive been on and off profile because of my foot and it causes me not to be able to run for more than a mile before the pain gets too much where i have to stop and its not getting any better. i was told that if i got at least 6 profiles for the same thing that i can get a permanent profile. is that true? if not what are the stipulations in getting one. im about to my 7th profile for the same thing and im tired of going to sick call over and over
If you’re looking for a Company Command you’re at a serious disadvantage. Staff positions (BN/BDE) won’t be an issue since you’ll PT on your own and take your APFT with the staff guys. I’m a staff guy now and we have guys with P3 profiles. It’s no big deal in this arena. I’m quickly learning that I really don’t like being a staff guy. I prefer being tactical.
I’m Signal and we don’t need Command to be competitive for MAJ (BN S6 will cover that requirement instead). Check what you need for selection to MAJ. If you need Command to be eligible you may consider a branch transfer.
What did your Branch Manager say about getting a P3? I would go on his recommendation. Call DA and see what he has to say.
You could certainly lead from the front in another branch. You don’t have to be Armor.
At any rate, my only recommendation at this point is for you to get your entire medical file from the hospital, slip it under your ACU jacket, take it to Kinkos and get the whole thing copied, then return it. The Army conveniently ‘lost’ my medical file at one point, thus my history of back problems, my duty-inflicted hernia, and several other issues never happened. Bah.
Anyway, good luck.

Copy your medical records now!!! Go to a medical review board and prove to them you still have it in you! Get an assignment in a non combative unit. They have that power.
