Simile – a figure of speech that expresses a resemblance between different things
Life is like:
How would you describe life? Is it a wonderful thing? Is it dull? Is it exciting at times, heartwarming at times, sad at times, etc???
Once you determine what you feel about the topic, find a word or phrase to express it, that would not normally apply as a descriptor of your subject.
Example; in the movie “Forrest Gump”, he would say, “Life is like a box of chocolates.” What did that mean? To me, this simile meant, life is a wonderful gift, and we are to enjoy every morsel (every moment) of it fully.”
Metaphor –suggesting a resemblance where one does not explicitly exist
Love is:
What do you feel love is? Maybe a necessary part of life, maybe a luxury enjoyed by only a few lucky people, maybe something to be searched for and thankful for once found.
Once you determine what you want to say, find a word to express it that really does not explicitly apply to the topic.
Example 1; My mind is foggy right now. Indicating I am having a hard time coming up with something usable for the assignment. However, there is no actual “fog” inside my head, therefore foggy is a metaphor for a lack of ideas in this example.
Example 2; Love is blind. Love has nothing to do with the lack of sight. However, the phrase suggests a similarity between blindness and the fact that many people in love tend not to see the deficiencies in character of those they love, or that they see only the good in those that they love and are "blind" to the bad.
