How are jigsaw puzzles cut?

Yeah yeah….with a jigsaw, right? 🙂 As a guy who puts together a few puzzles a month I`ve often wondered how they do it. In woodworking, there`s a term called `kerf` which is the width of the blade used to cut the wood–when you measure out a piece of wood, you `cut alongside the line` and not `cut on the line` as you`ll screw up your measurement because of kerf, yet a jigsaw puzzle requires a fine precision cut so it must either laser cut or press-cut because both methods would aleviate the kerf problem to give you an even image. Obviously, it wouldn`t be cost effective or time efficient to make them `one piece at a time`. As I sit here having proudly just finished my 1000 piece Return Of The Jedi puzzle, I can`t help but wonder. Anybody? How do they cut up a jigsaw puzzle without destroying the image?

In the old days though, they carved the wood in the shape of the puzzle pieces, carved the puzzle pieces, put the special paper on (for example, if it were an animal puzzle they’d be putting animal pieces on) and then taped the rest of it onto a piece of wood.
