How do you take a taxi ?

I'm the type of person who doesn't like taking taxis or buses at all. There's just something about it that makes me uncomfortable. However, I realize I need to get used to it since I won't always have someone to give me a ride to the places I want to go. Plus, having my provisional license without a car isn't a viable option. I would prefer to start taking taxis to parties and other events, but I have no idea how it works. How much do they charge? Does the fare depend on the distance or how close the destination is?

Most taxis have a “flag drop” rate which is the price you have to pay for stopping the taxi basically. If you get in the car and decide you don’t want to take the taxi anymore you’ll still have to pay the flag drop rate. This can be anywhere from 2-5 dollars depending where you are. Then there is a per 1/2 mile or per mile rate. If you’re stuck in traffic a lot of taxi services will have a rate per hour. The rate in my area is 28 dollars an hour for traffic delay. Hope this helps!
