how to change the backup memory in vba?

I am having trouble saving my progress in Pokémon Fire Red while using Visual Boy Advance (VBA). After defeating the Elite Four and Gary, I receive a "Saving... Please don't turn off the Game Boy" message, followed by a "Save Error." It seems that I need to change the backup memory. Can someone please guide me on how to do this? Thank you!

BEST WAYfirst change options/emulator/save type to flash 128ksecond CONTROL R to restart game.  u lose progress, but this is the ONLY way to do it.  otherwise u cant even get the NATIONAL DEX and stuff.

If you have the "In Game" option to save the game then you'll be fine but you can also save your progress by using the VBA save. To do this goto file > Save Game and choose a slot. When you're back at the game just goto Load Game instead of Save Game. If you just want it to be automatically loaded you can also tick "Auto load most recent" in the "load Game" tab

try changing the save type in the options to flash/flash 128k.
