How to convince my 240 lb, 76 year old grandpa to not get full knee replacement?

How can I convince my 240 lb, 76-year-old grandpa to reconsider getting a full knee replacement?

I believe his right knee pain is primarily due to his weight. While most of his body appears relatively fit, with thin legs and knees, he has a notably large stomach. Recently, after a visit to a restaurant where he had to walk no more than half a block continuously, he complained of pain in his other knee. I genuinely feel that knee surgery is not a miracle solution, especially considering his overall condition, and I worry that the other knee will soon start to experience similar issues.

He is not very inclined to exercise, often expressing concerns that it affects his heart. Currently, he is taking around 20 different medications for various health issues, including high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Additionally, he takes several medications to prevent conditions such as asthma, tuberculosis, and prostate cancer.

It seems that doctors are often quick to recommend surgery, and my grandpa tends to follow their advice without considering alternative viewpoints. Is there a website or resource that could help me approach this conversation with him more effectively?

Its really his decision, Its hard for some one who cant walk and is that old to lose weight. He needs to talk to others who have had this done. Several of the ones I know love it, but others less so. Again, he needs to carfelly evaluate and make the decision himself.

My 77 year old 275 lb father had double knee surgery done a few years ago and said he wish he never had it. Both knees are really hurting again now and he is doing everything to avoid more surgery. He gets injections and they help for a while. He knows he needs to lose weight, but it is not easy. Maybe see if some of your grandfather’s friends, neighbors, relatives have had knee surgery and talk to them to get their input.
