How to decipher tax codes on Ontario Wal-Mart store receipts?
Hello everyone,
I've done some research but still can’t seem to find a clear explanation, so I’m reaching out for help from all the knowledgeable contributors here.
As I review various store receipts, I’ve noticed different codes listed on the right side, which I believe are related to taxes. For instance, on my Wal-Mart receipt, there are codes such as 'J', 'C', 'E', 'D', and 'A.'
I understand that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is 5% and the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) is 8%. While I know that some items may be exempt from these taxes, I find that the 'E' code does not correspond with my expectations.
If anyone could provide clarification on these codes and their meanings, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Have you considered the case where only one of the taxes are applied? While GST and PST have very similar criteria, there are some items where only one or the other would be applied. For example, diapers should have only GST and not PST applied.
