The greater-than symbol resembles a V on its side, with the wide end facing left. The symbol for greater than is ">", while the symbol for less than is "<".

When one value is smaller than another, we use a "less than" sign. Conversely, when one value is larger than another, we use a "greater than" sign.

To remember the orientation of the "<" and ">" signs, consider the following:

BIG > small

small < BIG

The "small" end always points to the smaller number.
