how to treat my cats UTI with no vet?

My cat has a urinary tract infection, and I cannot afford to take her to the vet. How can I treat it at home? I'm very worried and want to ensure she doesn't suffer. Please provide helpful suggestions, and I kindly ask that you refrain from criticizing my situation. Thank you.

http://www.catconnection.net/care/urinary.php go here and read this to make a more informed diagnosis. There are many things that cause pee-problems and it could be crystals (less odds of that with a girl cat) or an obstruction among infections, etc…

2 tsp of apple-cider vinegar added to her drinking water for a month or so can not hurt! Offer wet food and even add a bit of additional water to up her water intake as long as she IS peeing. Cranberry pills are available at the health food store – they wont drink the juice normally…. Google for home remedys but AFTER you read and make a diagnosis. Cats tolerate Augmentin well for an antibiotic. Its a childrens form, a powder that can be mixed with wet food. 1 vial makes several kitty doses and I have used expired bottles, as long as sealed. (A clinic gave some to a friend who helped a feral cat colony, said may be a little weaker, but no way harmful.) BEST OF LUCK!

now, to respond to the IF YOU CANT AFFORD A VET YOU GIVE UP THE CAT people: I am an Old Lady on a fixed income. I have 4 street adopted cats who are the light of my life. Each of them would have DIED by now without my care and intervention. I have little money, fixed income…and don’t get the greatest health care myself… and you folks saying I should rehome my cats due only to my financial situation are being elitist, arrogant and unrealistic. A poor person has a lot of love and concern to give. SO what, my cat cant get an MRI and neither can I. We get our shots and basics that we can afford. Both my cats and I live within MY means, and are not going to curl up and give up because Vet trips and Doctor visits are not always affordable. (And i am NOT on the Taxpayers back, either, SO THERE (tongue stuck out)) i am glad your life is good and your cats well vetted – that is ideal! Wish ALL of us could afford it!! If one CAN afford it and doesn’t bother to – thats reprehensible. But not all of us are so lucky to have an ideal financial life BUT we still deserve our cats! (off my soapbox now)

How do you know she has a UTI? If you cant afford a vet then I doubt you have had a urine test done? Just because she is peeing in the house doesnt mean she has a UTI. It is a likely diagnosis but without the proper urine test by the vet, you cannot possibly treat what you have not confirmed is wrong. This cat REALLY needs to go to the vet. A urine test and some antibiotics shouldnt be excessively expensive and you could discuss setting up a payment schedule with the vet so at least the cat can get the appropriate medical treatment. You simply CANNOT treat this without the cat seeing the vet, determining the problem and the vet ordering the correct medicine. Isnt there anyone you could borrow the money from? You do realize that if your cat does have a medical problem, it will only get worse, and if it is a urinary tract infection, it could spread to her blood or kidneys and could in fact kill the cat. Find a way to get the cat to the vet ASAP!!!

Do you understand that a UTI is very painful, and can lead to more serious – as in even more expensive to treat – problems? Then cay cause blockages (which causes a painful death for the cat when their bladder bursts), and even kidney and bladder infections. There is NO home treatment – she needs antibiotics which only the vet can give you. So you won’t rehome her – you’d rather have her in pain every time she has to pee? And what happens when she starts to pee all over the house? No amount of any grocery store ‘urinary formula food’ is going to cure a bacterial infection. Maybe that isn’t what you want to hear, but it’s true. You have no choice but to take her to the vet, or allow her to suffer which is really selfish on your part. Most vets have brochures on a 6-month interest free credit card called care credit. Call around and see what vets have it. Surely you have luxuries like the internet and a cell phone – and probably more – that could be given up to pay for taking her to the vet. You *choose* not to be able to afford it.

ETA – by the time you get done fooling around with herbs and natural remedies (many of which can be quite toxic to cats) from unproven sources you could have taken the cat to the vet and gotten something for her that will actually WORK. Vets are not a ripoff – what is a ripoff are all those ‘natural healing’ web sites that promise miracle cures with the product they are advertising to you.

Serious people do you know how much vets charge for a “simple” uti? I worked at a vet office the charge 30$ to test just the urine on a drip stick and that doesn’t insure a uti then they charge 10$ a pilll for antibotics that I have seen not work on cats th ended up going natural and it works. They also would charge 40$ for exam 200$ for X-ray or ultrasound the bill can get up 500$ for a waste of it not working. I understand where she is coming from lots of medicine for animals just don’t work and are very expensive to just waste money… you can call a vet and ask if they have any antibotics that someone didn’t finished and give to them most likely it’s a uti female cats are very inlikely to get cytsals good luck girl and don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t love your cats!

After changing food and spending lots of $$$ on my cat …two different vets and all possible meds that didn’t work, I decided he needed water because he wasn’t drinking. I gave water by syringe 3X morning and 3X night for about a month and a half. He drinks on his own now, and seems very comfortable. No UTI.

Alert! New veterinary break-thru UTI cure = H20.

It was the dry food that had brought him down.. He’s Siamese, and when Purina started putting corn in everything, he crashed and started with the UTI. My other three cats had no problem.

Of course, now I feed mostly wet food (no fish) and grain-free Beyond (also Purina, but no grain).

If you can’t afford the vet fees for a simply UTI I would recommend to re-home your cat.

Imagine you are in a situation where you need medical treatment and you don’t get it because your care givers can not or will not afford it?

You would probably wish to have other care givers who loves you and who would pay for your medical treatment.

So does your cat – therefore either re-home your cat and don’t get any other pet until you are willing to pay for the vet if medical treatment is recommended or

simply pay the vet (they sometimes agree in payment plans) and save money on other things (less entertainment, less cigarettes, beer, sodas, chips, chocolade …. whatever).

UTI could be fatal if not treated at all and also an incorrect treatment (wrong medication, to high dosed, to low dosed, …) could be fatal as well.

All the people on here talkin about rehome ur cat wouldn’t think twice about taking your cat. Some people just have no brain when it comes to the love of an animal. They think you can just give up an animal that has become part of your family. It becomes one of your kids. Would you give up your kid because your struggling? I wouldn’t. We would make it through the struggle together. And just because you rehome it does not mean they are going to a better home. People will pay a rehoming fee and get the animal and abuse it. People should really think before they tell someone what they need to do. I hope you got the issue resolved and didn’t end up losing your cat.

There are a lot of people that are going all natural with their pet’s You got to think that when cats are giving antibiotics they not only kill the bad bacteria but also the good bacteria. So here is a website that will give you some ideals of what herbs to give your cat for urinary infections. There is this book I recommend you get Dog and cat care the natural way, Natural pet cures By doctor John Heinerman

Forwarded by Robert Goldstein V.M.D You can get a used book at Amazon.com for $3.00 or $4.00 dollars. These are trying times and there are a lot of people who have lost their jobs. If I was you I would type how to treat urinary tract infections in cats the natural way in google and look at all the options you have and also look for a store on line in your area that sells natural herbs. Also I know that cranberries is good for urinary tract infection but I’m not sure if it is good for cats you should look on line to see what foods cats could be allergic to and they do sell cranberry vitamins for people that you can crush and put in her food. A matter a fact I know that some dry foods for cats have cranberries in them. I think you should listen to what ZZZZZ’s says it is worth a try. People we all know these are trying times they way the economy is please we are all cat lovers and what we should want best is for that cat to get better so we should work together to give less bashing and more help. If people can not afford a vet at these trying times we should be more understanding about peoples situations at this time. You never know one day we might be in that situation. There must be help some where for low income people to get help with their pets. Here is another link that say peeing all over the place is a sign of urinary tract infection. CHECK OUT THE THIRD LINK AND YOU CAN FIND HELP FOR LOW INCOME PEOPLE FOR VET CARE FOR YOUR ANIMALS IN PITTSBURGH PENNSYLVANIA
