How was Texas admitted to the Union? What were the key historical events and decisions that led to its statehood?

Texas was annexed by the United States as a slave state in 1845. At the time of its absorption into the Union it was an independent republic. Mexico, however, still regarded it as a renegade province and thus the transfer of sovereignty resulted in the Mexican-American War.
If Texas is taken over by Mexico and the people vote to Cede from the Union, then they should be allowed to peacefully do so. Georgia has been declared a sovereign state, separate from the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union is taking by force a territory they wish to keep. (there is an oil pipeline there)
