How would you convert Atoms to Kilograms?

I would like to know how to convert atoms into kilograms. Specifically, could you provide the relevant formula or calculations for this conversion? For example, how many kilograms are present in 8.970 x 10^6 atoms of potassium? Thank you! 🙂

Divide by avogadro's number (6.022 x 10^23), which will give you the number of moles of that element, then multiply by the molar mass of the element, in this case, 39.0983 grams, then divide by 1000 to convert from grams to kilograms.

The reason you are having difficulty is because you have no specified what the material is. Atoms of different substances have different weights, so 3.8 x 10^8 atoms off gold would weigh a lot more than 3.8 x 10^8 atoms of helium, for example. What you need to do is to realize that once you have defined the substance, then you can convert atoms to mass in grams or kilograms by using Avogadro's number and the atomic weight of the substance. Oxygen for instance has an atomic weight of 16, but is diatomic, so a mole or 32 g of O2 contains 6.022 x 10^23 molecules of oxygen (or 1.204 x 10^24 atoms of oxygen. The mass of 3.8 x 10^8 atoms of this would be: 3.8 x 10^8 atoms oxygen x 1 mole oxygen/ 1.204 x10^24 atoms oxygen x 32 g oxygen/1 mol oxygen x 1 kg/1000 g. You do the math, if you're interested in solving this for oxygen. If not, put in the atomic mass of th element that you are interested in and solve in the same way.

Atoms and molecules are material particles and they possess mass. The mass of one atom of an element is known as the atomic weight of the element. Atomic weight should not be confused with another concept called atomic number of an element. Atomic number A is the simple sum of the number of protons (Z) and neutrons (N) the element has. Thus A = Z + N and is an integral number as Z and N both are integer numbers. The atomic mass or weight is an actual measure of the weight of the atoms in grams or kilograms. The table below gives mass of some of the atoms. Element Mass in Kg Hydrogen 1.67 x 10-27 kg Oxygen 26.56 x 10-27 kg Chlorine 58.9 x 10-27 kg Uranium 395.0 x 10-27 kg We can see that when we deal with the masses, since they are very small, it is inconvenient to use such numbers in calculations. To make calculations less cumbersome, weight of the atom of an element is compared to the weight of standard atom and their ratio is taken.

First, get moles of K. Do this by dividing atoms by Avogadro's Number:

8.970 x 10^6 divided by 6.022 x 10^23

Second, take the moles of K and multiply it by the atomic weight of K (get that from the periodic table). This will give you grams of K.

Third, divide the grams by 1000 to get kilograms. You are going to get a very small number for an answer, the exponent will be in the -19 range (give or take, I did it mentally).

Convert atoms to moles using Avogadro's number. Then use the molecular weight of the element to convert the number of moles to the mass in grams. Then convert grams to kilograms.

The key is Avogadro's Number = 6.023x10E23

That is: 1 mole = 6.023x10E23 atoms

8.970x10E6 K atoms * (1 mole K / 6.023x1023 atoms K) * (39 g K / 1 mole K) = 5.81x10E-16 g of K

use avogadro's number (6.022*10^23 atoms/mol) and the molecular weight.

8.970*10^6 atoms * (1 mol/6.022*10^23) * (M.W. in grams/1mol) * (1 kg/1000 g) = some number in kg
