If a varies directly as b, and a = 28 when b = 7, find b when a = 5?
If variable ( a ) varies directly as variable ( b ), and we know that ( a = 28 ) when ( b = 7 ), how can we determine the value of ( b ) when ( a = 5 )?

I’m guessing that varies directly should mean directly proportional to, so this is a ratio problem which should be set up as :
28/ 7 = 5/b
Cross multiply and divide to solve for b:
(7×5)/28 = 1.25
Therefore b = 1.25
28/7 = 5/x
cross multiply:
35 = 28x
divide each side by 28:
35/28 = 28x/28
x = 35/28
**simplify**
x = 5/4
hope this helps(:
