If you ran out of contact lens solution, what is the best option to clean your contacts?

Imagine you find yourself in a situation where you can't access any contact lens solution—for example, you're snowed in at home and have completely run out. What would be the best course of action for handling your contact lenses until you can get more solution? Here are a few options to consider:

  1. Reuse the leftover, dirty solution in your contact lens case from the previous night. You notice there’s still some solution remaining in the case that was used to clean your lenses before.

  2. Keep your contact lenses in your eyes overnight, even though you know it’s generally not recommended. Then, buy contact lens solution as soon as possible in the morning and clean your lenses thoroughly at that time.

  3. Soak your lenses in water overnight, even though you've heard it’s unsafe. In the morning, buy contact lens solution immediately and clean them properly.

I’ve heard that sleeping with contacts in is bad, but I’ve also heard that soaking them in water is harmful. I’m not sure which option would be worse in this scenario! What’s the safest approach?

Don’t use water it will mess with your contacts and yours eyes will hurt when you try to put them back in. I’ve been in this situation believe me I know. I have had to reuse the solution in my case before and that is the option I would choose. My doctor has told me its okay to sleep in them but that depends on the kind you wear. I also now keep a small bottle of solution in my purse so I won’t get caught without one again. Another thing that works in a pinch if you happen to at or near a hospital is normal saline.

Let us assume that for some reason you cannot obtain the contact lens solution. Let’s assume that you’re snowed in your house and you ran out!

Which is the best option?

1. Soak your lenses in the leftover, dirty solution that you cleaned them with last night: you look in your lens…

Number one is best with an addition: Then in the morning, wear your glasses to go to the store and buy new solution. Soak the lenses in the new fresh solution for the recommended time and then wear.

While at the store buy two bottles of solution. When the first one is empty, open the second one and buy a new bottle right away and continue to always buy a new bottle right away when one bottle gets empty. That way you will never run out again.

Number one is the best. You can reuse old solution if you need to because it’s actually not that dirty after storing contacts in it overnight. I’ve done it myself without any negative effects. I wouldn’t recommend doing your other suggestions because while sleeping in contact lenses might work for some people, they do tend to get dried out overnight. They can become literally glued to your eyeballs. As for storing them in water, tap water has impurities and those could damage your lenses. Also, if you put them on your eyes, they will stick to them.

the first!

it really isn’t that bad or harmful to your contacts.

if you sleep with your contacts in (2nd option) they’re get extremely dry and so will your eyes. your eyes will feel awful and probably burn a little bit when you wake up. plus your contact will get all crinkled and crumpled up. the last option (water) is bad because it’s just bad ?

seriously though, i’m not sure why but i think it washes away important stuff in your contacts. i just know that all the eye doctors say to NEVER wash your contacts with water.

NONE OF THE ABOVE, buy new contact lens solution, or if your broke go the the place where you got your contacts from and ask them, ” What is the best kind of solution I should use for my contacts?”, and they should give you a sample. If you contacts are not made to sleep in DON’T SLEEP IN THEM!!!, it will hurt your eye, lead to infection (conjunctivitus), the contact might dry onto your eye (seen it before and its NOT good) or lol you could get an infection!! You only have 1 set of eyes, take care of them!!!! Oh I’m an Optician if it helps lol!
