In pokemon Heart gold How does the daycare level up your pokemon?
Hi, I have a question about the Pokémon Daycare located south of Goldenrod City in Pokémon HeartGold. I’m curious about how Pokémon gain experience and level up while being left at the daycare. I’ve read online that their leveling is tied to the number of steps you take in the game— is that true? Could you explain how the leveling process works and offer any tips for efficiently leveling up Pokémon at the daycare? Thank you! 😊

Well i advice that you should ride your bike because because if you do one 1 step your pokemon get’s one exp point so if you ride your bike instead you can gain a lot of Exp points like. I do not like to put my pokemon in the Day Care Because when my pokemon is about to learn a move in the Daycare. The Daycare Lady gets to pick which move to delete sometimes she will delete a useful move that you will need so be careful and think. Hint: The Pokemon that i have in my PC i just give it to the Day Care Lady to train it so you are not leaving your other pokemon’s out.
Hope this helps
Every step is an exp point. Just ride your bike back up and down that path from the daycare center to goldenrod.
One warning. Whatever moves the pokemon learns while leveling up will be taught. This means you can lose a move your pokemon previously had. I made this mistake with a charmander that had belly drum. I wanted to level it up so I could EV train it and I took it out of the daycare at level 28 only to notice that the day care people had taught it fire fang in place of belly drum. That ꜱᴜcκed!!!
Good luck!

You gain 1 exp point per step in the game for a pokemon in the day care. So most leveling needed about a few thousands steps to happen which could take 30 minutes of playing straight walking while in actually most pokemon game play is standing still battling. So 2 hours of playing pokemon may only be 20 minutes of actual walking around which may get some higher pokemon to only about half exp.
Yes, it is based on how many steps you take. If you want to maximize your experience gain then I would suggest riding your bike back in forth in one area of the game. Now there are some bad things to doing this.
1. Your Pokemon doesn’t gain Effort Values (EVs). Effort Values are hidden values that each Pokemon you battle gives off. For example, when you battle a magikarp they give off one speed EV. When you get 4 EVs in one stat that reflects 1 point onto your overall total (the stat you see in the summary) Each Pokemon can have up to 510 EVs but only 255 EVs in each stat. However, due to the fact that 255 isn’t divisible by 4 it would be pointless to put 255 EVs into a stat and you’d be better off putting 252 if you wanted to max it out since 252 is divisible by 4.
2. Your Pokemon may be forced to forget a move that you want it to know. You see, due to previous experience, I know that the daycare lady will delete the move at the bottom of the list in your Pokemon’s summary. If you put the move you want at the top of the list it wont be deleted til 4 new moves are learned. So once 3 new moves are learned I’d take the Pokemon out and adjust the order so the move isn’t forgotten. Let me give you an example of how it’d work. Say your pokemon new the following moves:
Fire Punch
Thunder Punch
Ice Punch
Belly Drum
When your pokemon learns a new move in the daycare Belly Drum would be the first move deleted. Lets say it was replaced by growl.
Growl
Fire Punch
Thunder Punch
Ice Punch
See how growl was placed at the top? The moves are slowly moved down to the deleting point so if you wanted to keep Fire Punch you would have to change the order of the moves after 3 new moves are taught to your Pokemon.
There are however, benefits to using the daycare to level up.
1. You can get a Pokemon fully EV’d to level 100 (it’d take forever BTW) without actually battling
2. You can get a Pokemon to a high level without battling, this would only be good if it suit your purposes such as if you were looking for False Swiper to help catch pokemon but you dont want to spend time training it.
3. It’d may be good to help get a Pokemon up the same level as the rest of your team as long as its not to many levels they wont suffer to much from the lack of EVs.
I hope I helped 🙂
