Is 9.50 an hour a good salary for a college graduate?

I have a bachelors in history I graduated with 3 years ago and work making only 9.50 an hour at Lowe's. I've been there for a year.I'm also certified to teach but there aren't any teaching jobs at the city I live in (Dallas) or the city I graduated college from (Houston).

That's a terrible salary for a college graduate. I was making more than that during short internships freshman year. But you studied history. Didn't you know when you started that it's usually a dead-end major? Unless you are willing to travel long distances for a teaching job, there's really not much you can do with it. The fact that you hold a college degree is all anyone will care about, and even that won't help you much. All I can say is, if you have to take a job that doesn't pay well, find one you enjoy that will have long-term benefits/raises so you won't be stuck at 9.50 forever.... Show More
If you are asking the question, you must be wondering about yourself, right?Good -- you just started your own personal evaluation. The question to ask is not if that money is a good salary for a college graduate. Why? You are not just ANY college graduate: you are you. So, going back, the question is whether that money paid to you meets the experience that you think you put to that job. If you doubt anything about the money or what you do, you need to reevaluate and start afresh. Sometimes, it's OK to go back to move forward, but you must first have a GOAL to do that. If you move through life without a plan, you are likely to be "used" every step of the way. You've done an excellent job getting an education. Now reward yourself by finding what makes you tick and go for it.All the best.... Show More
You would be better off at a retail operation where there is a management training program, and unfortunatley Lowe's and Home Depot are famous for NOT having those. Even Costco would pay more, and with a degree you'd advance faster. Try other retail places (check the websites for management trainee positions). With customer service background, you could apply to places like the insurance company Geico, which generally start out about $30,000 a year or higher for people with two years' customer service experience.... yes, that's awfully low for your qualifications. A BS degree should pay you a good salary. If you are having difficulty finding jobs in the city you leave in, consider relocating to say NY or whatnot. That way you would be able to go into your area of interest and gain the experience. If you decide to move back to Dallas, your experience will definitely help you get a career within your field. Good luck!... Show More
No. But you have to start somewhere. Try telephone customer service. Your hourly salary should be higher and it might help you get in the door at company that offers growth potential. With your educational background, you might have a good chance as a career as a corporate trainer.... Show More
You need to go where the teaching jobs are or go to grad school and get a more marketable trade. $9.50/hr isn't a good salary for a high school drop out.... Show More
No, most vendors in Lowes' earned more than that. I was a vendor in Lowes and our company paid $12.00 / hr or more. Some vendors made as much as $16.00 / hr. and this was without a degree. If you want a teaching job, look at vιʀԍιɴia or south.... Show More
no its not. you dont need to have a college background at all to work retail, so you arent really using your education at all. 9.50 is pretty low. go on monster.com and put your resume out there; you may find something in the city or elsewhere.... Show More
You need to move and get a teaching job. 9.50 an hour is hardly enough to live on.... Show More
