Putting a mattress in a play yard?
I recently purchased the InGenuity pack and play/play yard, and I appreciate the added features such as the changing table, under-storage, and top bassinet. However, after assembling it, I've noticed that the bassinet isn't very firm and appears to be of lower quality. This makes me uncomfortable using it as my newborn son's primary sleeping space. Is it safe to place a firm mattress with a fitted sheet in the play yard, or would it be better to invest in a separate bassinet? If I opt for a bassinet, are they designed to accommodate fitted sheets? Thank you!

I thought the same thing when I got a pack and play with changing table for the my newborn to stay at Grandma’s house. I found out from several people that they are supposed to sleep on firm surfaces. You will see if you set them on anything too soft how easy they roll. I would be careful about adding a mattress bc the bassinet feature has a weight limit. You need to make sure that the weight of it and the weight of your son aren’t over the limit.
What I did for my daughter was wrap the mattress pad in one of the many fluffy blankets I got as a gift and then wrapped that tightly with a receiving blanket. If you do this be sure all the ends of the blankets are tucked under and you have a taut surface. It will feel more cushy and will still be safe for baby.
You should not put a mattress in it because the bassinet has a weight requirement and if it looks cheap it would be even more likely to break
Umm, you need to get a proper sleep area for your son and a pack and play is not it. The mattress will likely be smaller than the pack and play and you risk you child falling/rolling into the gap and suffocating (and yes babies that young roll, I got rid of my bassinet at 2 weeks as my son rolled into the side and he has been in his crib ever since). They also don’t offer the support a baby needs for their little bodies. Those bassinets are not meant to be slept in continuously, just occasional use which is why you likely find it insufficient. Look for a good bassinet on sale or have him sleep in his crib but please do not put a mattress in there! Best wishes!
